Are you tired of empty claims about 'natural' and 'holistic' pet foods? Products that seem to read well on the ingredient panel, but you're still not sure what exactly is in there, or where it came from?
Champion Pet Foods has changed that with their Orijen and Acana lines of dog and cat foods. You won't find these products in very many places in our area; but we carry both at Joey's.
What makes Acana special? In a word, quality. All of Acana's (and Orijen's) ingredients are sourced from farms and producers with which Champion has a working relationship. All of their fresh meats come from local or regional sources in Canada. This isn't always the case, as many large operations use commodities brokerage firms and contracts to aquire their ingredients.
These ingredients don't just come from trusted sources; they're delivered fresh every day. Many pet food makers use frozen or heavily processed products (they're cheaper) to avoid losses from spoilage or inconsistent supply chains.

All of Acana's products contain at least three fresh meat ingredients. As we discuss in many of our article on our site, using meat meals is less costly than using fresh meats, as it requires significantly more fresh meat to make a dry kibble with the same meat content as one using meals. Acana also uses more meal (always specified of course) ingredients than Orijen to provide a less costly alternative.
Before processing, Acana grain free dog foods are 60% (65% for cats) protein, and 40% (35% for cats) fruits and vegetables. For those looking for even more meat, Orijen is uses an 80 / 20 ratio for most of their foods (75 / 25 for the Senior Dog). Either way, these are two great options for anyone looking for a dry food produced with zero compromises in ingredient quality and sourcing.
