The Joey's crew headed downtown last weekend for the Red Cedar Jubilee. On Friday afternoon, we were guests onMichigan Afternoon with Jim Fordyce on MI Entertainment Radiofor their live remote outside of Wood & Sons Corn Bin in downtown Williamston.
On Saturday morning, Madeline, Tanya, and Derek participated in the Red Cedar 5K Run/Walk--a brand new event at the Jubilee.
The run was the brainchild of Drew Payton, a Junior at Williamston High School, and was held in memory of Ken Whelton: who put in many hours volunteering to set up and tear down the Jubilee infrastructure each year.
In addition to entering a Joey's team of runners, we also sponsored the event. Speaking of our running team, Madeline and Tanya particularly deserve a plug, deciding to run (they had both registered to walk) after the race started; congratulations to them both for finishing well-after spontaneously choosing to attack the run.
Early that afternoon, Joey's joined other area businesses, community leaders and friends in the Jubilee Parade. Representing our rather substantial dog pack were two Australian Cattle Dogs: Tanya's Blue Heeler, Annie, and Derek's Red Heeler, Hush. Hush sported her RuffWear Approach Pack, which she used to help us carry water and other goodies.
To cap off the day, we headed over to the Delta Rho Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International's annual Ugly Dog Contest, where Tanya was one of the judges. If you've never been to this great event, don't let the name fool you; as the event's organizers note, they've never seen a single ugly dog enter the contest.
Joey's provided gift cards as prizes for the winners in categories including longest legs, shortest legs, best tail wag and more.
Proceeds went to Paws With a Cause, a non-profit organization that trains assistance dogs for people with disabilities.
